G. I. BEARD GROWING CONTEST
INDIA AIR DEPOT - The newshounds of the India Ink couldn't find an Indian magician who
could do the "rope trick" this week, but they did dig up a sergeant stationed here who is in a beard growing contest
with a G.I. who is in England.
The sergeant is Clement T. Gira and his opponent is Cpl. Max Bailey, both from Adrain, Mich.
The contest started when Bailey wrote his India-based sidekick he was growing a beard, Gira, who
is proud of his hirsute sprouting ability, wrote back deriding his fellow townsman's attempt.
One letter led to another and it was decided they would both start from scratch and at the end of
eight weeks each would have his foliage measured and photographed to help determine the outcome of the contest.
Gira has just finished his eighth week, posed for his glamor photo and now awaits word from Bailey.
Gira just got in under the deadline, for his C.O. had decided that, decorated by a beard, Gira looked too much like
a bearer and ordered him to get it off, jaldi.
The winner must throw a beer binge to a selected group of friends after the war in Adrain. The total
check must run to one hundred bucks.
